On the last Friday in April, Scouts from Troop 9 participated in an Arbor Day tree planting celebration with the Champaign city forester (Andrew L.).  He presented to the scouts about the benefits of trees and the importance of planting trees. An open spot was selected to plant a Kentucky coffee tree across the street from the entrance of Holy Cross Church. Scouts had to first dig a hole, then line up the tree in that hole, they next had to backfill with soil and water for the tree’s roots, and lastly a 2-3 inch layer of woodchip mulch. All of the scouts who attended the planting earned conservation service hours.

The Scouts had a Boneyard Creek Cleanup service project this morning. We had a great turnout and the weather could not have been nicer. We saw plenty of geese and ducks, a rabbit, a blue heron, and a snake, but some of the top finds included a car radiator, a cell phone, leeches on a Coke 2L, and the burial site of Taco the hamster.

With the cancellation of Boneyard Creek Community Day back in April, the City of Champaign and Keep Champaign Beautiful were excited to support our scouts by providing litter sticks, buckets, trash bags, and gloves. A big thanks to everyone who helped make the event a success!
